Este conductor exterior rodea al resto de conductores para protegerlos de las interferencias electrost\u00e1ticas. Cuando se implementa adecuadamente, el blindaje exterior, que puede estar hecho de alambre trenzado o ser una l\u00e1mina de metal o de pl\u00e1stico conductor, es una especie de extensi\u00f3n del chasis del equipo y funciona normalmente como toma de tierra (es decir, un punto de referencia cero para sus voltajes internos). Por ello, el blindaje del cable contiene el conductor o conductores de la se\u00f1al en dicho voltaje cero de referencia. Un blindaje de buena calidad tiene una buena cobertura en torno a los conductores internos y una resistencia extremadamente baja para mantener la referencia de voltaje cero en toda su longitud.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, esta sencilla soluci\u00f3n de blindaje no es perfecta, ya que ser\u00e1 inefectiva frente a los campos electromagn\u00e9ticos a no ser que el conductor del blindaje sea un metal magn\u00e9ticamente permeable, como el acero o el n\u00edquel. Por esta raz\u00f3n se desarroll\u00f3 la tecnolog\u00eda de cables balanceados.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cables no balanceados<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Un cable no balanceado tiene dos conductores (conductor de se\u00f1al y blindaje o conexi\u00f3n a tierra) dentro de un cable que se conecta a un \u00fanico conector. Un cable de guitarra TS (o \u201cpunta-malla\u201d) convencional es un cable no balanceado. Los cables RCA est\u00e1ndar que se usan en componentes de AV utilizan dos cables no balanceados juntos (conectores phono\/RCA blanco y rojo).<\/p>\n<p>Dentro del cable, la conexi\u00f3n a tierra rodea al conductor de la se\u00f1al, que est\u00e1 en el centro. El blindaje o tierra tiene dos funciones: llevar parte de la se\u00f1al de audio (ruta de retorno de la se\u00f1al) y proteger al conductor de la se\u00f1al para evitar interferencias externas, como campos electrost\u00e1ticos, ruido o transmisiones de radiofrecuencia (RF). Cuando las interferencias inducen voltajes de ruido en el blindaje conductor, que tambi\u00e9n lleva la se\u00f1al, el ruido tambi\u00e9n se a\u00f1ade al voltaje de la se\u00f1al.<\/p>\n<p>Aunque la malla del cable sea muy buena y no muy susceptible a inducir voltaje de ruido, ofrece muy poca protecci\u00f3n frente al zumbido electromagn\u00e9tico. Un cable balanceado est\u00e1 compuesto por dos conductores que env\u00edan la se\u00f1al y que est\u00e1n rodeados por el blindaje. La conexi\u00f3n balanceada alimenta una entrada diferencial, lo que significa que el circuito solo funciona con la diferencia de voltaje que hay entre las dos se\u00f1ales. Cualquier voltaje que sea igual en ambos conductores se anula y el circuito lo ignora.<\/p>\n<p>Normalmente, las se\u00f1ales en los dos conductores son copias exactas opuestas pero, al contrario de lo que se cree, no tiene por qu\u00e9 ser as\u00ed. Algunas salidas balanceadas env\u00edan la se\u00f1al solo por un lado y el otro acaba en tierra, que tiene la misma impedancia del lado que env\u00eda la se\u00f1al. Esto es algo que se suele utilizar, sobre todo, en equipamiento alimentado con bater\u00edas.<\/p>\n<p>Lo que la convierte en una conexi\u00f3n balanceada no es la simetr\u00eda de la se\u00f1al, sino que ambos conductores tienen impedancias exactamente iguales a la tierra. La idea es que cualquier ruido que entre en uno de los lados termine llegando al otro, cancel\u00e1ndose luego en la entrada diferencial. En cables balanceados bien fabricados, los dos conductores de la se\u00f1al est\u00e1n trenzados uniformemente para asegurar que su exposici\u00f3n a los campos de ruido electrost\u00e1ticos o electromagn\u00e9ticos sea la misma y por tanto se anule.<\/p>\n<p>Para los cables de larga distancia que nos encontramos normalmente en aplicaciones de m\u00fasica en vivo, se desarroll\u00f3 otro cable conocido como Star Quad que mejora a\u00fan m\u00e1s su resistencia a las interferencias. Este cable apantallado tiene cuatro conductores internos individuales cableados en dos pares paralelos. Los conductores est\u00e1n colocados de manera alterna y trenzados juntos para mejorar el efecto de ambas ramas de la se\u00f1al que ocupan el mismo espacio. Los cables Star Quad son mucho m\u00e1s efectivos que los cables balanceados convencionales para las se\u00f1ales de nivel de micr\u00f3fono.<\/p>\n<p>En general, los cables balanceados pueden tener una gran longitud de 15-30 metros (50-100 pies). Un cable de altavoz moderno consiste normalmente en dos conductores el\u00e9ctricos de cobre aislados. Uno est\u00e1 marcado, con su aislamiento o con hebras chapadas, para mantener la polaridad correcta de la se\u00f1al de audio. El cable tiene tres propiedades el\u00e9ctricas importantes: resistencia, capacitancia e inductancia. La resistencia es la m\u00e1s importante con diferencia, ya que debe ser muy baja para optimizar la transferencia de la potencia de sonido del amplificador a la bobina de voz del altavoz.<\/p>\n<p>Si la resistencia del cable supera una peque\u00f1a fracci\u00f3n de un ohmio, comprometer\u00e1 el factor de amortiguamiento del amplificador. Adem\u00e1s, debido a que la impedancia del altavoz var\u00eda con la frecuencia, la resistencia del cable puede afectar a la respuesta de frecuencia. Esto se debe a que la resistencia del cable est\u00e1 en serie con la impedancia del altavoz, formando un divisor de voltaje que var\u00eda la transferencia de la se\u00f1al al altavoz con la frecuencia.<\/p>\n<p>La resistencia del cable del altavoz es proporcional a su longitud, e inversamente proporcional a la secci\u00f3n transversal (calibre) de sus conductores. Por este motivo, es recomendable que los cables de los altavoces tengan la menor longitud posible y, en caso de que deban ser largos, utilizar cables de mayor calibre para mantener una resistencia reducida.
